Biography

As a board-certified neurosurgeon at Carolina NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates, Daniel M. Oberer, MD, provides adult neurosurgical care. His clinical special interests include treating degenerative spinal disorders, malformations, tumors, and trauma through complex and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Oberer's educational background includes graduating medical school from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, attending residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and completing additional complex spine training at Vanderbilt.

Dr. Oberer learned what it means to value patients first from his father who was also a physician. He recalled, “My father was an old fashioned doc who understood the importance of serving his patients well: spending time with them, listening to them, and treating each individual as a person and not a number.”

When asked about his philosophy of care, he says, “From a young age, I was immersed in the culture of patient care, so naturally, I tried to follow in my father’s footsteps. I hope my patients know that I value their time, will listen, and do my best to provide the right care, no matter what.”

Dan Oberer always knew he wanted to be a physician, and once he learned more about the different fields of medicine, felt that neurosurgery was the right fit. “As a neurosurgeon I like that I have the potential to fix a problem. The elegance and complexity of the spine intrigued me. Throughout my education and training, several mentors provided inspiration and guidance as I developed into a neurosurgical spine specialist.”

After 16 years with Carolina NeuroSurgery and Spine Associates, Dr. Oberer feels grateful to be part of a large subspecialized group with a deeply rooted sense of collegiality. He collaborates with his peers and this allows patients to receive a multidisciplinary approach to their care. Dr. Oberer says, “Working for an independent practice, I am able to work for my patients first and foremost, and access a breadth of trusted subspecialists who practice with a patient first mentality as well.”

Dr. Oberer invites his patients to be active participants in their care, and encourages them to stay active.

Dan Oberer enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. Outside of neurosurgery, he loves to swim in a nearby mountain lake and travel out west for family ski trips.
